Independence Day has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941. This means that the general population get a day off. Celebrated on July 4th, this day has a long tradition of resting and spending time with friends and the family. And, since it remembers the freedom of the land, there are multiple patriotic displays and family events organized throughout the different cities and states.

Indeed, today the Independence Day represents a wonderful time to enjoy a long weekend with a barbecue, sunshine, fireworks and more between friends and family. However, the iconic “Fourth of July” is about much more than days to relax.

As Americans, we celebrate the Declaration of Independence because it represents an official severing of ties between the original 13 colonies and the rule of Great Britain, but also represents the base for identity as citizens of the US.

The history is well-known: on July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England. This event led to the formation of the United States.

Independence Day is an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate many things including:

  •  Appreciation for those who defend the nation’s freedom

There are millions of people who have served the United States throughout the years, defending the land’s freedom and some have even given their lives with that purpose.

  •  Appreciation for the opportunity to participate in Government

Thanks to the fight of the founding fathers and leaders, today people have the opportunity to be involved in the democratic process with different actions including a vote, getting involved in different issues of interest, run for office, etc.

  •  Thankfulness for freedom

The United States of America is known to be a land that offers people the freedom to worship as they choose without having fear of being shut down, arrested or worse. More than a quarter of the nations in the world restrict or prohibit the practice of different religions. However, in the US people can choose their religion and live according to their faith.

Can you think of more things to celebrate? We are sure there are many! Happy Fourth of July from Wagner!
